Coyotes in My Backyard: TRAVIS MILLARD

Founder of the Fudge Factory Comics publishing company in 1997, Los Angeles-based artist Travis Millard marvellously combines social and political irony with absurdity in his theatrical yet overtly bizarre and hilarious pen and ink drawings on paper. Primarily influenced by skateboarding graphics, horror movies, punk rock and comics, Travis Millard has always been exploring and experimenting with new ideas, mediums and techniques as a means to convey humour and to provide for a low-key satire built around a series of open-ended sketches on common things. Cross Paths: AIDAN BAKER and MATT SMITH

As one of the most intriguing contemporary composers, Toronto-born and Berlin-based Aidan Baker’s path could be summed up as perpetually challenging; whether releasing under his own name, or under the moniker Nadja (which started as a solo project and later evolved into a duo with bassist Leah Buckareff), each record can be treasured not just for its own value but as part of a bigger quest for sound sculpting and, ultimately, for approaching the very idea of music. Tapes’n’Tales: JOHN CASEY

Human instinct cannot be destroyed but can only be transformed into other states, altered reflections, distorted perceptions of ourselves. The idea of transformation which forms the basis of Oakland-based artist John Casey’s work is subtly internalized and provides for a meaningful symbolic representation of the state of duality we constantly experience in the world and within our own selves. Drenched in The Rain of Dreams: Dimitri Drjuchin

Creation is a spiritual process, healing and transformation in a multitude of ways. This is certainly true for New York-based artist and musician Dimitri Drjuchin, who bravely embraces Christian iconography to create new levels of perceived reality and visions of self-representation through a clever combination of cultural metaphors and visual symbology. Drjuchin’s comical and surreal imagery extends beyond the general idea of downfall and craftily turns it into a cheerful and optimistic reflection on the human condition. By imbuing the real with highly colorful geometric compositions, Drjuchin’s paintings, murals and art posters unveil a refreshingly authentic foray into cosmic communion and happiness. It comes as no surprise that Dimitri painting adorns the cover of “Fear Fun“, Josh Tillman’s first release since his departure from Fleet Foxes under the new moniker Father John Misty. The very title aptly suits Dimitri’s artistic and personal exploration. He kindly took us through this sparkly journey, revealing more from the influences on his creative process to his own music projects . Read the rest of this entry »
Cross Paths: HANNE HUKKELBERG and FOREST
For the return of our Cross Paths series, we could not be happier. Since debuting seven years ago with the astonishingly peculiar “Little Things”, Hanne Hukkelberg has been on a quest to never repeat herself and still find a personal true sound. A task which is taken to spectacular results on her newly released “Featherbrain”. Read the rest of this entry »
LIFE AS SEEN FROM ANOTHER PLANET: Ryan Heshka

..And he came from someplace else. Vancouver-based artist Ryan Heshka has long worked in the dream-like world of his own fanciful creation. Acutely informed by the imagery drawn from the Golden Age of science fiction, Heshka’s paintings feature a strong element of dark humor that is, unintentionally and efficiently, multi-faceted, vigorous, vibrant and sharp in color. Ryan Heshka is an amazing artist and one of our personal favorites, no need to hide it. His works, executed in a style which is incredibly unique, honest and unpretentious, have been featured in Vanity Fair, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, just to name a few, and exhibited all across the continent and Europe. We had the great pleasure of interviewing Ryan Heshka as he prepares to open up his first European solo show at the Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea in Milan, Italy. The exhibition will open on Thursday, March 22, 2012, so make sure to drop by and say hi to Ryan. Otherwise take a peek at some of the works from the upcoming show , here on Love and Dishwasher Tablets, and read our interview after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
