Coyotes in My Backyard: TRAVIS MILLARD

Founder of the Fudge Factory Comics publishing company in 1997, Los Angeles-based artist Travis Millard marvellously combines social and political irony with absurdity in his theatrical yet overtly bizarre and hilarious pen and ink drawings on paper. Primarily influenced by skateboarding graphics, horror movies, punk rock and comics, Travis Millard has always been exploring and experimenting with new ideas, mediums and techniques as a means to convey humour and to provide for a low-key satire built around a series of open-ended sketches on common things. Drenched in The Rain of Dreams: Dimitri Drjuchin

Creation is a spiritual process, healing and transformation in a multitude of ways. This is certainly true for New York-based artist and musician Dimitri Drjuchin, who bravely embraces Christian iconography to create new levels of perceived reality and visions of self-representation through a clever combination of cultural metaphors and visual symbology. Drjuchin’s comical and surreal imagery extends beyond the general idea of downfall and craftily turns it into a cheerful and optimistic reflection on the human condition. By imbuing the real with highly colorful geometric compositions, Drjuchin’s paintings, murals and art posters unveil a refreshingly authentic foray into cosmic communion and happiness. It comes as no surprise that Dimitri painting adorns the cover of “Fear Fun“, Josh Tillman’s first release since his departure from Fleet Foxes under the new moniker Father John Misty. The very title aptly suits Dimitri’s artistic and personal exploration. He kindly took us through this sparkly journey, revealing more from the influences on his creative process to his own music projects . Read the rest of this entry »
Rise and Blossom: Collage art by NATHANIEL WHITCOMB

When we were kids we could amuse ourselves for hours flipping through the pages of those old vintage illustrated books. We could read them by staring longingly at the pictures. They stirred our imagination and swept us along endless explorations into new mysterious, invisible lands. Such explorations were hidden treasures, as is Nathaniel Whitcomb’s enchanting digital journey. Working in both visual art and collage, Cleveland-based designer Nathaniel Whitcomb (a.k.a Think or Smile) employs vibrant and suggestive narrative elements in his works to create multiple clusters of images in motion. He sits down to talk with us today about his visual arts projects, his motion collages and his recent collaborations with some great musicians you should definitely keep an eye (and ear) on. I Woke Up Early Just To See You Fly Away: KELLY DYSON

If one song were to describe the intimate artistic universe of Kelly Dyson, what song would it be? Undoubtedly, our personal choice would be I’ll Be In The Air from the album Don’t Wake Me Up by The Microphones, 1999. Coincidentally (or maybe not), Don’t Wake Me Up is even the business persona of High Peak based illustrator and poster artist, Kelly Dyson. Looking at his artworks is more like being part of a sweet but interrupted melody. The magical mood and atmosphere seem to be more important than any real or specific moment. Everything expressed by the artist in his illustrations, screen prints and linocuts is the manifestation of a powerfully melancholic, devastating and brightly coloured noise. In this interview, Kelly shares his experience as an artist and musician. Plus, he speaks about the new prints he’s currently exhibiting in Warrington Museum and Art Gallery with other artists from Hot Bed Press. Love is Just a Word. Rip your heart out and let it float down this river of small and precious wonders. Read the rest of this entry »
