Metalheads by Jörg Brüggemann

“Heavy metal is a phenomenon. Although this musical genre is still ridiculed by many, it is currently more popular and successful around the world than at its supposed peak in the 1980s. Today, so-called metalheads can be found worldwide. No matter who they are or where they come from, they are united by heavy metal across borders, generations, genders, religions, and social classes” (Metalheads, 2008 – 2011). German photographer Jörg Brüggemann, member of the well-known photographers’ agency Ostkreuz, captures a powerful look inside the contemporary underground heavy metal subculture in his comprehensive and well-documented three-year photo project entitled Metalheads. This Is The One: DENNIS MORRIS and THE STONE ROSES

St. Andrews, Scotland. Summer 1990. A tiny independent record shop. A Jackson Pollock-style record cover as the only object in its even tinier window, as if to say “this is the only record you need right now; this is the one”. To a teenager’s ears, to any teenager’s ears, there was no need for words. Read the rest of this entry »

Exhibit Openings: Interview w/Elena Rapa + Dast

Dast and Elena Rapa opened their latest show, “Mutamenti”, at Fabrica Fluxus Art Gallery in Bari, Italy, on Friday April 6th. The exhibition, curated by Nico Murri and Roberta Fiorito, shows new paintings and a wide variety of drawings digging deeper into absolute and ancestral themes: the relationship between human beings and the natural/supernatural environment. The art pieces are displayed in four themed sections: “Anima e Corpo” (Soul and Body) which explores the classical theme of vices and virtues, of Eros and Thanatos; “Mutazioni” (Mutations), the passing of time, the cycle of the seasons, the idea of catastrophe; “L’Ira funesta” (The Deadly fury), the throbbing heart of destruction; and lastly, “Nuovi Mondi” (New Worlds), describing the unexpected, the imagined and the possible (re)birth. Check out more photos and watch our interview with the artists after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Wildwood, Carson Ellis and Colin Meloy’s first kid’s book

“In Wildwood, Prue McKeel’s life is ordinary. She lives in Portland, Oregon, where it rains a lot. She has a mother and a father and a baby brother. Ordinary. At least until her brother is abducted by a flock of crows. And then things get really weird. On every map of Portland there is a big splotch of green on the edge of the city labeled “I.W.” This stands for “Impassable Wilderness.” No one’s ever gone in — or at least returned to tell of it. And this is where the crows take her brother. So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval, a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much bigger as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness. A wilderness the locals call Wildwood”. Read the rest of this entry »
