Cross Paths: AIDAN BAKER and MATT SMITH

As one of the most intriguing contemporary composers, Toronto-born and Berlin-based Aidan Baker’s path could be summed up as perpetually challenging; whether releasing under his own name, or under the moniker Nadja (which started as a solo project and later evolved into a duo with bassist Leah Buckareff), each record can be treasured not just for its own value but as part of a bigger quest for sound sculpting and, ultimately, for approaching the very idea of music. Cross Paths: HANNE HUKKELBERG and FOREST
For the return of our Cross Paths series, we could not be happier. Since debuting seven years ago with the astonishingly peculiar “Little Things”, Hanne Hukkelberg has been on a quest to never repeat herself and still find a personal true sound. Cross Paths: THE GOLDEN FILTER & KRISTOFFER BORGLI

“Syndromes” is a short film directed by the young and talented Kristoffer Borgli. “Syndromes” is also the second album by The Golden Filter, the New York electronic duo consisting of Penelope Trappes (vocals) and Stephen Hindman (synthesizers). “Syndromes” is a rare case of a movie whose music is not simply a soundtrack but the reason for the movie itself to exist in the first place. Cross Paths: WAY YES & JOHN MALTA
Would have The Velvet Underground been as iconic without Warhol’s banana? Would The Smiths have maintained the same sexual ambiguity without the young actors portraits’ covers? Would Aphex Twin remain a menacing musician without Chris Cunningham’s little boys? The answer is doubtlessly “yes, but not quite so”. Because if music can be strong and affecting, its combination with the art world or its association to films and videos lends an even more potent and compelling quality, making both the visual and the audio instantly recognizable and utterly unforgettable. “Cross Paths” will therefore be a foray into how music, movies and art can meet and what goes behind it: the artists, and how they get to work together.
