Travelling Through Soundscapes: FRANCESCO GIANNICO and ALESSIO BALLERINI

Soundscapes, the “unfinished symphony and without which we are simultaneously shaped the composers, performers and listeners” (Raymond Murray Schafer). In our accelerated world, these soundscapes, the mixing and fighting of nature and industrial landcapes, the sounds that come with them, the sounds that we make, represent an incredibly interesting proposition, the ultimate frontier and an heritage which needs being preserved. It is with this idea that Francesco Giannico and Alessio Ballerini, already respected artists and musicians in the field of multimedia installations and field recordings, decided to team up and form “Archivio Italiano dei Paesaggi Sonori” (Italian Archive Soundscapes), a loose collective that since 2010 has launched numerous projects, workshops and festival appearances. Exhibit Openings: Interview w/Elzo Durt + 108

Haunting geometrical compositions, vibrant colours and a sparkling labyrinth of art pieces ranging from a bizarre and provocative surrealism to a gloomy and abstract minimalism were some of the hallmarks of the double solo show recently opened at Doppelgaenger, in Bari, and featuring works by Italian artist and musician 108, aka Guido Bisagni, and Elzo Durt, Belgian illustrator whose swirling psychedelic graphic style is often associated with posters and album covers designed for the likes of Thee Oh Sees and Jack of Heart. Exhibit Openings: Interview w/Elena Rapa + Dast

Dast and Elena Rapa opened their latest show, “Mutamenti”, at Fabrica Fluxus Art Gallery in Bari, Italy, on Friday April 6th. The exhibition, curated by Nico Murri and Roberta Fiorito, shows new paintings and a wide variety of drawings digging deeper into absolute and ancestral themes: the relationship between human beings and the natural/supernatural environment. The art pieces are displayed in four themed sections: “Anima e Corpo” (Soul and Body) which explores the classical theme of vices and virtues, of Eros and Thanatos; “Mutazioni” (Mutations), the passing of time, the cycle of the seasons, the idea of catastrophe; “L’Ira funesta” (The Deadly fury), the throbbing heart of destruction; and lastly, “Nuovi Mondi” (New Worlds), describing the unexpected, the imagined and the possible (re)birth. Check out more photos and watch our interview with the artists after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

LIFE AS SEEN FROM ANOTHER PLANET: Ryan Heshka

..And he came from someplace else. Vancouver-based artist Ryan Heshka has long worked in the dream-like world of his own fanciful creation. Acutely informed by the imagery drawn from the Golden Age of science fiction, Heshka’s paintings feature a strong element of dark humor that is, unintentionally and efficiently, multi-faceted, vigorous, vibrant and sharp in color. Ryan Heshka is an amazing artist and one of our personal favorites, no need to hide it. His works, executed in a style which is incredibly unique, honest and unpretentious, have been featured in Vanity Fair, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, just to name a few, and exhibited all across the continent and Europe. We had the great pleasure of interviewing  Ryan Heshka as he prepares to open up his first European solo show at the Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea in Milan, Italy. The exhibition will open on Thursday, March 22, 2012, so make sure to drop by and say hi to Ryan. Otherwise take a peek at some of the works from the upcoming show , here on Love and Dishwasher Tablets, and read our interview after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Imaginaria Film Festival 2011, 9th Edition

No coincidence that in recent years we have seen an exponential increase of film festivals; this “market”, in fact, do not seem to know any crisis. The problem of festivals overcrowding is to identify those who seriously and professionally have really something to say. The challenge, therefore, is to emerge and assert itself in an open-ended sea of festivals in which the quality is not often very high. Read the rest of this entry »
