2012 ROUNDUP: Music Videos

This weird 2012 has been definitely a year full of very beautiful music videos and, above all, a year of confirmation for many promising directors who in 2011 raised high expectations. In general, the best videos have few special effects (or at least they are not the bulk of the work) and tell strange stories, sometimes funny, sometimes incredibly painful. Like life, after all. This list is not exhaustive and is not a ranking but only the result of a choice, acceptable or not.  Enjoy and see you next year. Read the rest of this entry »

Filming The Music: AG ROJAS

If you watched the latest music video for Spiritualized’s “Hey Jane” – the first single from their new album “Light Sweet Sweet Heart” – you would surely wonder who is the director behind this 10 minutes masterpiece, whose almost half consists of one of the most beautiful sequence shot ever seen in a music video. Well, the answer to this question is: AG Rojas. Read the rest of this entry »

Filming The Music: SCOTT CUDMORE

If by chance you watched some amazing music videos, characterised by a light and a rigor in the construction of the image that remember certain films of the Eastern Europe, long videos, longer than the songs they film, you would have probably fallen on a video by Scott Cudmore, a young promise of the international filmmaking based in Toronto, Canada. The way he conceives and realizes his music videos is definitely original and it struck us deeply. Some names he worked for? Fucked Up, Timber Timbre, Modern Supersticions, Great Lake Swimmers, Brian Bocherdt, The National, Hidden Cameras among others. We looked for him, we “reached” (power of the net!) him and, with a rapidity that has favorably caught us, he answered a series of questions we made and he commented some of his videos. We really enjoyed this exchange of ideas with Scott and we are sure that in not a lot of time this interview will be much more precious than it is already now, we bet on it. I WANT MY MUSIC VIDEO ART SHOW: Celebrating Over 25 Years of Musical Inspiration

How about making a series of eye-catching pieces of art deeply inspired by famous music video scenes, frames, artists and oddly curious characters who have captured music lovers’ imagination for over three decades? The goal would be to gather up some of the best artists on the contemporary scene and create an exhibition of artworks depicting a brief history of music video. Nearly a month ago, we stumbled upon the news that visual artists Chris Marrs Piliero and Dave MacDowell would start working on a group exhibition entitled «I Want My Music Video Art Show». Jumping for joy after receiving this great news, we decided to save that for later. So here we go. Starting today, October 7th, 2011, Meltdown Gallery on Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, will be hosting «I Want My Music Video Art Show», a massive group show featuring over 100 traditional, digital and mixed media artists whose visions span a variety of mediums, and bring to life conceptual inspiration that floats the spectrum from smooth sensuality and humor, to hardcore social realism. We had the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the upcoming show. Take it away, be sure to press down on the ‘play’ button when you find it and jump deep into this dangerous waterfall of art.
